About
Professor O O Bolaji is a professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry with special focus on drug metabolism and pharmacogenetics. He has over the years had opportunities to lead many research teams and mentor many young scientists in Obafemi Awolowo University and in other universities in Nigeria. Some of his mentees are now senior academics. He has contributed to production of two books and have over 45 publications in reputable journals. Over the years of his research experience, the research focus has been in utilizing pharmacogenetic tools in understanding diseased conditions with a view to providing interventions and strategies that could improve management of these diseased conditions.
He worked with colleagues in the Department to establish the first therapeutic drug-monitoring laboratory in Nigeria. He has also worked in collaborations with colleagues in South Africa, Zimbabwe and other African countries to develop a DNA data base for Africa through the establishment of a Consortium for the Study of Pharmacogenetics of African Population. This consortium has resulted in productive collaboration involving the establishment of a biorepository of 2000 blood and DNA samples from nine major ethic groups from Nigeria, Kenya, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe, pharmacogenetic research capacity building through training of PhD and MPhil students and publications in reputable journals.
