Dr Adebanjo Jonathan Adegbola

Dr Adebanjo Jonathan Adegbola is a Clinical Research and Product Development EDCTP Fellow at the KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Training Programme (KWTRP), Kenya. He previously received an EDCTP-Preparatory Fellowship to develop expertise in malaria genomics at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark under the DEEM-FIT project.

Adebanjo holds a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and he is affiliated with the Faculty of Pharmacy, Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria. With the expertise gained during his EDCTP fellowship at the KWTRP and University of Copenhagen, he is investigating the impact of parasite molecular signature on the efficacy of Intermittent Preventive Treatment during Pregnancy using Sulphadoxine-Pyrimethamine.

Besides, with funding from the GSK Africa Open Laboratory, Adebanjo is currently carrying out a study titled “Assessment of Drug and Diagnostic Resistance Signature in Plasmodium falciparum: Implications on Strategies for malaria control in Nigeria (ADDReSS-Malaria)”

Research Interest

  • I have investigated the influence of host genetics and pregnancy on the pharmacokinetics interaction between antiretroviral and antimalarial drugs for effective treatment of malaria of during pregnancy.
  • My current research interests include strategies to investigate the malaria parasite molecular structure and its impact on the effectiveness of antimalarial drugs including study on the effectiveness of chemoprevention among pregnant women.
  • I also focus on developing portable and cost-effective amplicon-based sequencing assay for malaria molecular surveillance (MMS) in Nigerian population.
